Key Stage 3:

All pupils in years 8, 9 and 10 study Home Economics on a weekly basis alternating between practical cookery and theory lessons. Lessons comprise of 2x40min periods.

  • Stages in the life cycle

Year 9

  • The Eatwell guide
  • 8 tips for making healthier choices
  • Nutrition
  • Fat, Fibre, sugar & water
  • Breakfast
  • Food allergies and intolerances
  • Traffic light labelling
  • Budgeting

Year 10

  • Ethical consumerism
  • Methods of payment
  • Consumerism
  • Food around the world
  • Dietary related disorders
Year 10 pupils are given the opportunity to enter the Irish News “Big School Cook Off”.


Key Stage 4:

GSCE – Home Economics

Unit 1 – Food and Nutrition – Exam – worth 50% of final mark

Unit 2 – Practical Food and Nutrition – Controlled assessment task worth 50% of final mark
