The Irish Department aims to support the entire curriculum, whilst still providing opportunities for Irish as a subject in its own right. We aim to teach in a meaningful context, providing pupils with experiences of using Irish creatively and with confidence.

Key Stage 3:

At Key Stage 3, Irish is delivered over two periods per week.

YEAR 8 CURRICULUM

In Year 8, pupils study the following topics:

  • Describing Self, others and family
  • Pastimes
  • Colours
  • Counting and time
  • School Life

YEAR 9 CURRICULUM

In Year 9, pupils study the following topics:

  • Food and shopping
  • Irish Counties and Countries
  • Holidays
  • The house
  • Emotions & The body


YEAR 10 CURRICULUM

In Year 10, pupils study the following topics:

  • Family and Friends
  • Home Area
  • Occupations
  • Daily Rountine
  • Shopping & Money

Key Stage 4:

At Key Stage 4, the Irish Department offers Irish at GCSE Level. Pupils follow the CCEA specification.

Pupils will be examined on their knowledge of the language within the following contexts for learning:

  • Context 1: The Individual
  • Context 2: Citizenship
  • Context 3: Employability

Pupils will be assessed in the four main skill areas of: Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading.

Extra-curricular activities:

Pupils in St Patricks are encouraged to travel to the Gaeltacht to further enhance the language learning experience. Pupils also take part in a yearly Céilí as part of our ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ in the lead up to St Patricks day each year. We also take part in the Gael Linn quizzes and Euro-language quizzes every year which the pupils thoroughly enjoy. In Year 10, each pupil also has the opportunity to achieve the silver Fáinne.
